Crowns

At Coastal Pediatric Dentistry in South Carolina, we offer a variety of dental crowns to those patients who have experienced either a significant amount of tooth loss, a large fracture from trauma, or a root canal in a tooth. Having the top of your tooth fully functional will help you chew your food and aids in speech and proper jaw development.

We may recommend a crown for your child if they have extensive decay or a broken tooth. In some cases, we may need to keep the baby tooth to act as a “placeholder”, or space maintainer, for the permanent tooth to come in. In instances where it may only be one to two years until the baby tooth will

fall out, we might do a stainless-steel crown just to provide function again and protect the root. In the esthetic zone, we might do a composite crown or a porcelain crown.

Frequently asked Questions

What types of crowns are available for children’s teeth?

Stainless steel crowns are more durable, easy to place, and inexpensive, but don’t offer good esthetics.
Composite resin crowns are not as durable, but they offer better esthetics and are a little more expensive.
Porcelain crowns are the most esthetic, cost the most, and are extremely durable.

What is involved in making a crown?

To prepare a tooth for a crown, we generally trim the top and sides of the tooth to make room for the cap which will cover the tooth. If it is a stainless-steel crown, we can seat it right in the office. If we are doing a long-term crown, we might take impressions of the teeth and send them to the lab to make a porcelain or metal crown. On a second visit, we would cement the crown.

What can we expect after the procedure?

Typically, we will numb up the tooth to place a crown. As a result, until the anesthetic wears off, you should avoid eating to avoid biting the cheek or tongue. The tooth or the gums may be tender for a few hours but acetaminophen (Tylenol) or Ibuprofen (Advil) should be enough to control it.

How can we prevent needing a crown?

While most crowns are done because of decay, it could also be because of trauma from a sports injury causing a chip in the tooth. Being sure to treat small cavities while they are small is a good start. Wearing a mouthguard when playing sports can help minimize trauma. Good oral habits of eating healthy and home care can minimize the cavities from starting in the first place.

If you break a tooth or have decay that causes you to lose a significant portion of your tooth, contact us immediately to ask about getting a dental crown. When you receive a dental crown, you should be careful to avoid chewing crunchy or hard sticky candies. Continue to use proper home oral care, and wear a sports mouthguard to protect your teeth. At Coastal Pediatric Dentistry, our team is trained to provide safe, gentle care for your children.
