Dental Cleanings

One of the best ways to prevent tooth decay is to have regular professional cleanings. At Coastal Pediatric Dentistry, our team is committed to making sure your child’s first visits as well as ongoing visits are FUN. The entire staff is trained in giving proper home-care instructions, behavioral modification, and is committed to making sure every child has a great visit.

We want your child to look forward to coming in to see us. This is why a comfortable but thorough cleaning done by our professional staff will make a difference in your child’s attitude towards coming to the dentist.

We consider the cleaning visits, more than “just a cleaning”! In addition to removing plaque and tartar off the teeth and gums, we polish the teeth with very mild pumice to make them shiny and less likely to allow bacteria and sugars to adhere to the surfaces of the teeth.

Frequently asked Questions

Prevention is key in children?

As part of the visit for your child, we will also look into offering preventive services such as fluoride treatments, sealants, night grinding guards, oral home care, and much more. Using early caries diagnosis and detection, we are able to offer some more advanced options besides waiting for the tooth to develop a full-blown cavity.
Since most kids will be in to see us 2-3 times a year, it is critical that we instill good home-care habits for both the parent as well as the child for those other 362 days of the year when you aren’t at the dentist office! Creating good habits today can pass on to the future as well as the value of optimal home care and healthy eating.

What is proper home care for infant teeth?

It’s a good idea to wipe off your child’s gums with a damp, soft washcloth after each feeding. Getting in the habit of wiping them clean or using a soft bristle brush once they start getting teeth is a great habit to get into!

What happens when a baby is “teething”?

When your child begins to have their first set of teeth, it can be uncomfortable and cause irritation. You can help soothe their gums by rubbing gently on them either with a clean finger, or you can use a cold teething ring.

At what age should children be brushing their own teeth?

In general, we find that children who are 4 or 5 years old will be able to brush their own teeth. Prior to that, the parents should be handling it and monitoring their brushing and home care.

Whether we are recommending a soft toothbrush, flossing techniques, or nutritional coaching, the professional team at Coastal Pediatric Dentistry is ready and willing to help you and your child create great habits for a healthy lifetime of smiles!
